Given The Chance-Refugee Employment Mentoring Project

Project Summary

The project will link jobseekers with mentors and provide training on the Australian job market and workplace culture. Through meetings with mentors, workplace visits and training, participants will learn first hand about the labour market, career development opportunities, their occupation in Australia, recognition of overseas qualifications, Australian workplace norms and culture and other pertinent issues. Through working with mentors and project staff, participants will set realistic career goals and develop pathways to meet their goals.

The project will initially be implemented accros two locations, one centrally located to provide access to people living in the Inner West, Northern and Southern Sydney, and the other in Central Western Sydney. There will be three staff recruited to the project; one at each location to deliver employment case work and training for refugees, the third staff member will work accross both locations recruiting, training and supporting mentors and sourcing work experience and employment opportunities.

Target group

The project is aimed at refugees and humanitarian entrants who are unemployed or underemployed.

Aim and objectives

The project aims to enhance the employability of refugees in their intended field of work through:

  • Improving access to local occupation-related information and providing orientation to the Australian job market and workplace.
  • Increasing confidence and developing professional networks.
  • Establishing a practical and achievable career plan in order to achieve occupational goals.
  • Increasing the capacity of training organizations and Job Networks to provide services to refugess.
